About

A.H. Hogue Campground is one of five campgrounds in the Medicine Lake Recreation Area, located at 6,770 feet elevation in the Medicine Lake Highlands of northeastern California. The campground offers a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites along the shores of Medicine Lake, sheltered by mature lodgepole pine forest. The area provides excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming in Medicine Lake, with a concrete boat ramp and designated swimming area nearby. Hiking and mountain biking trails originate from the recreation area, including the trail to Little Mt. Hoffman. The campground sits adjacent to the Medicine Lake Lava Flow, accessible via a short hike, and serves as a gateway to the surrounding volcanic landscape including Glass Mountain and Burnt Lava Flow Geologic Areas. Nearby attractions include Lava Beds National Monument, located within a 30-minute drive, featuring extensive lava caves and tubes to explore. The Tulelake National Wildlife Refuge is about an hour away, offering exceptional migratory waterfowl viewing. Cell phone reception is limited throughout the Medicine Lake area.
