About
A.H. Hogue Campground is the largest of five campgrounds in the Medicine Lake Recreation Area, located in the Modoc National Forest of northern California. Situated directly on the shores of Medicine Lake at 6,770 feet elevation, it offers 24 spacious campsites suitable for tents, trailers, and motorhomes up to 30 feet. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and barbecue grill. Facilities include vault toilets, water hydrants, and garbage dumpsters. The campground provides easy access to Medicine Lake's eastern beach areas and a nearby boat ramp on the southeast shore. Popular activities include fishing, swimming, and boating on the lake. Lava Beds National Monument, featuring extensive lava caves and tubes, is located within a 30-minute drive. Fifteen sites across Medicine and A.H. Hogue Campgrounds are available for advance reservation through Recreation.gov; remaining sites are first-come, first-served. The campground enforces a 14-day stay limit. Note that the Annual Pit River Tribal Gathering typically closes the Medicine and Hogue loops in mid-July.
Directions
From McCloud go east on US Hwy 89 south for 16 miles to Forest Service Road 15/Harris Spring Rd. Turn left on Road 15 and go 4.4 miles to Forest Service Road 49/Medicine Lake Road. Follow the signs 27.5 miles to Medicine Lake. From Tulelake take US Hwy 139 south for 21 miles to Forest Service Road 97. Turn right on Road 97 and go 24 miles turning right on Road 49. Drive 2 more miles turning left into the entrance of Medicine Lake Recreation Area. Follow the signs to your final campground destination.
