About
Nestled in the scenic Medicine Lake Highlands of Modoc National Forest, Payne Springs Campground offers a primitive camping experience surrounded by volcanic terrain and natural beauty. This free, dispersed campground is adjacent to the Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway and provides convenient access to nearby Lava Beds National Monument, making it an ideal base for exploring the area's fascinating geology and volcanic history. The campground features basic amenities including picnic tables and fire pits at each site, along with pit toilets. Campers must be self-sufficient as there is no potable water or trash service provided. Visitors should bring adequate water for drinking, cooking, washing, and extinguishing campfires, and must pack out all trash and waste. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit. Payne Springs is perfect for experienced campers seeking a quiet, secluded getaway in the remote northeastern corner of California. The surrounding Medicine Lake Highlands offer opportunities for exploring volcanic features, hiking, and enjoying the peaceful solitude of this lesser-known corner of the Modoc National Forest. Road conditions to the sites are described as fair, and pets are allowed on leash.
