Lake Winfield Scott Campground

Open

Open year-round with North Loop available during the off-season. Bridge replacement on GA 180 near the entrance may cause temporary delays and single-lane traffic. Large RVs should approach from Dahlonega to avoid construction.

About

Lake Winfield Scott Campground occupies a scenic mountain valley in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, centered around an 18-acre lake constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The campground offers 31 sites arranged in two loops (north and south), accommodating tents and RVs. Sites 12, 13, 14, and 15 feature water and electric hookups, while Site 21 has electric only. A rental cabin with electricity, water, kitchen appliances, and a wood stove sleeps up to 7. The lake allows swimming and fishing, with only electric motor boats permitted. An accessible fishing dock provides shoreline access. Two hiking trails depart from the recreation area: the 1-mile Jarrard Gap Trail and the 2.7-mile Slaughter Creek Trail, both connecting to the Appalachian Trail for extended backcountry options. The south loop contains the restroom facilities with flush toilets and showers. Vault toilets, grills, picnic tables, and lantern posts are provided throughout. There is no dump station on-site; the nearest is at Vogel State Park.
