About
Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area offers year-round camping in the heart of Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest within Union County, Georgia. The recreation area is centered around the scenic 18-acre Lake Winfield Scott, which forms the headwaters of Cooper Creek and was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The campground consists of 31 sites configured in two loops suitable for both tent and RV camping. Sites 12, 13, 14, and 15 offer water and electric hookups, while the remaining sites are standard non-electric. The facility provides showers, flush and vault toilets, grills, picnic tables, and lantern posts at each site. No dump station is available on-site, though nearby Vogel State Park offers this service for a nominal fee. A group campsite and a rental cabin sleeping up to 12 people are also available. The lake offers excellent fishing for catfish, trout, perch, bream, and bass, with an accessible fishing dock and boat ramp available. Only hand-powered and electric motor boats are permitted. A designated swimming area includes a bathhouse, playground, and picnic facilities. Three hiking trails originate within the recreation area: a 0.4-mile lake loop, the 1-mile Jarrard Gap Trail, and the 2.7-mile Slaughter Creek Trail, both of which connect to the Appalachian Trail. Wildlife including deer, bear, wild turkey, grouse, and songbirds inhabit the surrounding forest.
