About

Lake Chatuge Recreation Area is a day-use only Forest Service site situated on the scenic shores of Lake Chatuge in Towns County, Georgia, near downtown Hiawassee. This free recreation area serves primarily as a lake access point, featuring a public boat ramp for motorized boats and a one-mile walking trail that winds through pine and hardwood forest along the lakeshore, offering picturesque views of the water and surrounding Appalachian Mountains. The site is managed by the Blue Ridge Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. It operates as a primitive day-use area with no amenities: there are no restrooms, no potable water, and no camping facilities. Visitors should plan accordingly and bring all necessary supplies. The area is ideal for day trips focused on boating, hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Chatuge. Group activities are not permitted at this location. Lake Chatuge itself is a man-made reservoir on the Hiawassee River, shared between Georgia and North Carolina, offering opportunities for various water-based recreation.
