About

Lahontan State Recreation Area Equestrian Campground is located within Nevada's popular Lahontan State Recreation Area, approximately 18 miles west of Fallon. The campground caters specifically to equestrian users, offering staging and camping facilities for visitors traveling with horses. The terrain consists of sandy soil with scattered cottonwoods and willows, surrounded by open high desert and sagebrush communities with views of distant mountains. The equestrian area provides access to extensive trail systems that wind through the desert landscape along the Carson River and around Lake Lahontan's 69-mile shoreline. Riders can explore varied terrain including sand dunes, riparian zones, and desert flats. The reservoir, located approximately 500 feet from the equestrian camping area, offers additional recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The park is home to wild horses, bobcat, coyote, fox, deer, and numerous bird species including migratory waterfowl, pelicans, herons, egrets, hawks, and nesting bald eagles. The campground operates year-round on a reservable basis through the Nevada State Parks system. During winter months (October through April), the park undergoes winterization with limited facilities. The maximum stay is 14 days within a 30-day period, consistent with Western Region Nevada State Parks regulations. The park sits below 4,000 feet elevation in a high desert climate where spring and fall provide the most comfortable camping conditions.
