About

Fort Churchill State Historic Park Group Use Areas offer a dedicated space for group camping and picnicking along the scenic Carson River in Nevada's high desert. This reservation-only area can accommodate up to 60 people and includes a covered pavilion equipped with picnic tables, a sink with food preparation countertop, and a large charcoal grill. The site features a unique fire ring with amphitheater-style seating, perfect for group gatherings and campfire programs. Two vault toilets serve the area, and garbage service is provided. The group area is situated within Fort Churchill State Historic Park, which preserves the ruins of Nevada's first and largest military outpost established in 1860. The park sits at 4,250 feet elevation along the Carson River, surrounded by rolling desert hills and the Pine Nut Range. Large cottonwood trees provide shade throughout the camping areas. Visitors can explore designated trails to the fort ruins, hike the 2.2-mile Nature Trail along the river, enjoy catch-and-release fishing, bird watching, and canoeing. The group use area is designed for tent camping only with no RV access and no electrical hookups available. Fires are permitted only in the designated fire ring. The park is open year-round with day use entrance fees of $5 for Nevada vehicles and $10 for non-Nevada vehicles. Reservations for the group area are required and can be made by contacting the park office.
