Nestled in a forest of Jeffrey pines and aspens at an elevation along Highway 88, Kit Carson Campground offers a picturesque setting on the west fork of the Carson River in Woodfords Canyon. Several campsites are located right next to the water, providing excellent fishing opportunities and scenic river views. The campground is surrounded by quaking aspens and rugged canyon walls, creating an especially stunning display during fall when the foliage changes color. The campground is ideal for tent camping and accommodates smaller RVs, though parking spurs are limited in size. Each site includes a bear box for food storage, picnic table, and fire pit. A camp host is on-site during the season, and firewood is available for purchase. The location serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Carson Pass area, with numerous trailheads within a short drive including access to the Mokelumne Wilderness and the Pacific Crest Trail. The Tahoe Rim Trail is located within 5 miles. Visitors can enjoy scenic driving and photography along the Carson Pass Scenic Byway, fishing and boating at nearby lakes, and rock climbing opportunities in the canyon. Lake Tahoe is within 20 miles, and Grover Hot Springs State Park in Markleeville offers natural spring-fed soaking pools. This bear country requires proper food storage at all times. California campfire permits are required.

Directions

From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 89 over Luther Pass to the 88/89 interchange. Turn left on Highway 88 and go approximately 1 mile to the campground entrance on your left. From Gardnerville, Carson City, or Minden, Nevada, take Highway 395 to Highway 88. Head south on Highway 88 for approximately 19 miles to the campground entrance in Woodfords Canyon on the north side.
