Hope Valley
Open seasonally from mid-May through early September, weather and conditions permitting. The campground operates first-come, first-served with some sites reservable through Recreation.gov.
About
Hope Valley Campground is nestled in a forest of Jeffrey and lodgepole pines at the edge of its beautiful namesake valley in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. At 7,300 feet elevation and just 40 minutes south of Lake Tahoe, the campground offers 21 sites including 19 standard nonelectric sites and 2 tent-only sites. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, tent pad, and food storage locker. The West Fork Carson River runs nearby, providing excellent rainbow and cutthroat trout fishing opportunities. Numerous trails in the area offer hiking and backpacking access to the surrounding Sierra Nevada wilderness. Black bears frequent the area, so all food must be stored in the provided lockers or approved bear-resistant containers. Lake Tahoe is only 40 miles away, offering world-class boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and scenic driving. A free California Camp Fire Permit from CalFire is required for campfire, barbecue, and portable stove use.
Directions
From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 89 over Luther Pass. At the junction of Highways 88 and 89, turn right and travel 2 miles west on Highway 88 to Blue Lakes Road. Turn left and proceed 1.25 miles to the campground entrance on the right.
