About

Luther Pass Overflow Campground is a primitive, backcountry campground managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit on Highway 89, approximately 16 miles south of South Lake Tahoe. This free campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. The facility includes 11 designated campsites and enforces a five-day stay limit per season. Camping is only permitted in designated spots. Situated at 7,000 feet elevation just up the road from Big Meadow Trailhead, the campground provides convenient access to the Tahoe Rim Trail for hikers and backpackers. Basic amenities include vault toilets and a dumpster. Drinking water is not available on-site. Campfires using wood, charcoal, or solid fuels are only permitted within permanent iron fire rings when the campground is open and enhanced fire restrictions are not in effect. Summers are typically warm and dry, though nighttime temperatures can be cold and afternoon thundershowers are common. Snow is possible during any month of the year, so visitors should be prepared for changeable weather conditions. The campground's primitive nature and free access make it popular for budget-conscious travelers exploring the Lake Tahoe area.
