Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 4:55AM EDT by NWS State College PA

4:55 AM — 6:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels and leaf litter, low relative humidity of around 35 percent and a southerly wind gusting between 20 and 25 mph during the late morning and afternoon hours, will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread across the southern half of Pennsylvania today. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly. For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire prevention and education, please visit the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website at http://dcnr.pa.gov/Communities/Wildfire.

About

Kings Gap Environmental Education Center encompasses 2,531 acres of forested land on South Mountain in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The center's unique attractions include mountainous terrain, extensive forests, and sweeping panoramic views of the Cumberland Valley from the historic Italian villa-style Cameron-Masland Mansion, located at the summit after a scenic four-mile winding road. The center offers limited camping options, primarily featuring a rustic organized group tenting site that accommodates up to 35 people. Additionally, the mansion provides overnight lodging in various room configurations, available for rental primarily on weekends during the operating season. The facility is specifically dedicated to environmental education and interpretive programs for Pennsylvania citizens, offering curriculum-based programs for schools, teacher workshops, and public programming throughout the year. Outdoor recreation opportunities include more than 25 miles of interconnected hiking trails, a permanent orienteering course, picnicking facilities, hunting, and wildlife watching. The park's three main areas are connected by trail systems that remain open year-round. The mansion and grounds are available for meetings, retreats, weddings, and special events during the rental season. An electric vehicle charging station is available in the Education Center parking lot.
