About
Kimball Lake Campground is a small Superior National Forest campground located about 12 miles north of Grand Marais in Cook County, Minnesota. This intimate 10-site campground is particularly appealing to anglers, as Kimball Lake is a state-managed trout lake stocked with rainbow trout. Because of this special designation, a Minnesota fishing license with a trout stamp is required. A non-maintained trail circles the lake for shore casting opportunities. The campground features pull-in sites with tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Drinking water is available from solar-powered faucets, and vault toilets are provided. Sites can accommodate moderately sized RVs, though there are no hookups and some sites may not be suitable for larger rigs. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Nearby Mink Lake offers additional recreation with a barrier-free fishing pier and sand swimming beach. The campground is accessed via the Gunflint Trail and Trout Lake Road. During winter months, the campground road experiences regular dog mushing traffic, limiting vehicle access.
