About
Pelton Creek Campground occupies a scenic location at 8,100 feet elevation where Douglas Creek and Pelton Creek converge, positioned at the eastern edge of the Platte River Wilderness. The campground features 14 sites arranged in a single loop, with one side running parallel to Pelton Creek through a stand of lodgepole pines. Some sites overlook the creek and adjacent meadow. The understory is grassy and sites are fairly close together, providing minimal privacy. The campground serves as a trailhead for wilderness access via the Douglas Creek Trail and Platte Ridge Trail, both leading deep into the Platte River Wilderness. The Douglas Creek Trail follows the creek for 9.5 miles through an open canyon, and hikers can complete a loop by returning via the Platte River Trail. Douglas Creek offers excellent trout fishing opportunities. A stock unloading facility is located near the campground, though stock are not permitted within the campground itself. Although the 2020 Mullen Fire burned through surrounding areas, the campground was spared and remains a remote oasis for developed recreation. The tall pines provide excellent shade and ambiance. The meandering creeks and tall brush can attract moose, so visitors should exercise awareness when venturing to the water's edge. The campground operates as a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites.
Directions
