About
Located on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar along the Housatonic River, Kettletown State Park encompasses 605 acres of diverse terrain. The park's name comes from local legend that early colonists traded one brass kettle to hunt and fish on land originally inhabited by the Pootatuck tribe. The area was submerged when the Housatonic River was dammed in 1919 to create Lake Zoar, Connecticut's fifth largest freshwater body. The campground offers 61 sites spread across partially wooded and open settings, including 55 RV/tent sites and six rustic cabins. Most sites can accommodate trailers or RVs up to 28 feet, with one site featuring full water and electric hookups. Each standard site includes a picnic table and fire ring. The two-room cabins sleep four to six people and come equipped with a double bed and two bunk beds, available for minimum two-night stays on weekends. Hikers can explore over six miles of trails traversing varied terrain with scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar. The William Miller Trail showcases the park's geological features, including glacial erratics. Youth group camping is available at three dedicated sites that can each accommodate up to 60 campers. The park offers bathhouses with showers, a dump station for registered campers, and picnic areas. Note that alcohol is prohibited throughout the park, pets are not allowed in the campground, and swimming is not permitted.
