About
Kamloops Terrace Campground is part of the Rexford Bench Recreation Area, the most highly developed recreation complex within the Kootenai National Forest. Located on an arm of Lake Koocanusa in northwest Montana near the Canadian border, the campground sits in a ponderosa pine forest at approximately 2,470 feet elevation. The reservoir, formed by 422-foot Libby Dam on the Kootenai River, stretches about 90 miles with over 127 miles of shoreline. The campground offers 20 first-come, first-served sites along with additional overflow parking for boat trailers and RVs. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Flush toilets and drinking water are available at the adjacent Rexford Bench Campground facilities. The area is known for excellent fishing opportunities, with anglers catching kokanee salmon, Kamloops (rainbow) trout, west slope cutthroat trout, bull trout, and whitefish. Fishing derbies are held several times throughout the season. Boating and swimming are popular activities on the reservoir, with high and low water boat ramps available. Nearby hiking trails include the Hoodoo Trail, which leads to impressive sandstone formations along the lake. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with osprey frequently fishing around Libby Dam at sunset and bald eagles hunting kokanee during fall. The Kootenai River below Libby Dam is a blue ribbon fishery, and guided tours of the dam and powerhouse are offered at the visitor center during summer.
