About

Rock Lake sits in the heart of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, accessible via Trail #935 from the Rock Lake Trailhead. The 4-mile trail begins on an old mining road that passes the historic Heidelberg Mine before transitioning to single-track tread for the final steep mile to the alpine lake at 4,965 feet. A couple dispersed campsites exist in Rock Creek Meadows and at the lake, offering true wilderness solitude. The area is known for excellent wildlife viewing. Moose occasionally appear in Rock Creek Meadows, and mountain goats are often spotted on the rocky slopes surrounding Rock Lake. The lake holds native westslope cutthroat trout. Numerous stream crossings dot the trail, with most having bridges except for a major crossing less than a quarter mile from the trailhead that can be difficult during peak runoff. As wilderness camping, all supplies must be packed in and all trash packed out. Food storage is required per Forest Service order due to grizzly bear presence. No motorized vehicles or mechanized equipment are permitted within the wilderness boundary. Standard wilderness party size and stock animal limits apply.
