About

J.W. Wells State Park sits along three miles of Lake Michigan's Green Bay shoreline, 30 miles south of Escanaba in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Established in 1925 and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s, the 700-acre park preserves both natural beauty and historic character. The modern campground features 150 sites divided into north and south loops, most with views of Lake Michigan. Sites offer 30-amp or 50-amp electrical service, and the campground includes a sanitation station with potable water. Modern toilet and shower buildings serve campers, along with vault toilets. The southern loop features an accessible playground with sensory panels, climbing features, and rubberized surfaces. The park's day-use area offers a buoyed swim beach, beach house with changing facilities, two picnic shelters with electrical service, and an observation platform overlooking Green Bay. The accessible Cedar River Trail connects facilities throughout the park. Five rustic cabins are available year-round, each with propane heat, vault toilets, and hand pumps for water. Lakeshore fishing, paddling, hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing provide year-round recreation opportunities.
