About

Juniper Family Campground sits on the Pajarito Plateau at approximately 6,600 feet elevation within Bandelier National Monument, offering convenient access to one of the Southwest's most significant archaeological preserves. The campground is a short drive from the visitor center and connects directly to the Frey Trail, which descends into Frijoles Canyon where ancestral Pueblo people carved homes into volcanic tuff cliffs centuries ago. The Tyuonyi Overlook Trail also departs from the campground area. The campground's three loops accommodate different camping styles. Loop A (Abert's Squirrel) operates year-round on a first-come, first-serve basis and includes two group sites reservable up to 12 months in advance. Loops B (Black Bear) and C (Coyote) are reservable through Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead. Loop C closes seasonally from November through February. All individual sites include fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and bear-proof food storage lockers. Comfort stations with flush toilets and running water serve each loop. The surrounding pinon-juniper woodland transitions to ponderosa pine at higher elevations within the monument. Wildlife including mule deer, Abert's squirrels, and black bears are common. The nearby towns of Los Alamos and White Rock provide supplies, cell service, and WiFi. From mid-May to mid-October, a free shuttle connects the campground to Frijoles Canyon, as private vehicles cannot access the canyon during peak season.

Directions

From Santa Fe, take Highway 84/285 north, merge onto NM 502 toward Los Alamos, then exit onto NM 4 toward White Rock. Continue 12 miles through White Rock. Bandelier's entrance is on the left. After the entrance station, turn right onto Campground Road. For reservations, proceed directly to your site. For first-come, first-serve, Loop A is the first right.
