About
Jumbo Rocks Campground occupies one of the most scenic locations in Joshua Tree National Park, surrounded by the dramatic boulder piles that give the park its distinctive character. Formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and sculpted by erosion, these massive rock formations create a natural playground for scramblers and a stunning backdrop for camping. The campground sits at 4,400 feet elevation in the park's interior, where temperatures are typically warmer than the higher-elevation western areas.
The 124 individual sites accommodate tents and RVs up to 35 feet combined length. Each site includes a picnic table and fire grate, though campfires are only permitted from October 1 through June 14 due to fire danger. Several hiking trails originate from the campground, including a short interpretive nature loop. The desert setting means no potable water is available; the nearest water source is 11 miles away at Oasis Visitor Center. Vault toilets are located throughout the facility.
Peak season runs October through May when daytime temperatures range 70-90°F and nights cool to 40-60°F. Summer brings extreme heat exceeding 100°F, making it the park's off-season. Desert wildlife including lizards, ravens, ground squirrels, and occasionally tarantulas may be observed. Clear desert skies offer exceptional stargazing opportunities.
