Jumbo Rocks Campground

Open — The campground is currently open and accepting reservations year-round. Reservations are required and can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Sites book up quickly, especially during the peak season from October through May. Campfires are currently allowed in designated fire rings only—the annual fire restriction period (June 15-October 1) has ended, so wood and charcoal fires are permitted. Check-in and check-out time is noon.

About

Jumbo Rocks Campground lies in the heart of Joshua Tree National Park, where massive granite boulder formations create one of the most visually stunning camping experiences in the California desert. At 4,380 feet elevation, the campground's 124 individual sites are distributed across sandy terrain between towering rock piles that glow with soft pastel hues during sunrise and sunset. These ancient rocks, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and sculpted by wind and water erosion, create a natural wonderland for exploration and photography. The campground's central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the park. Several hiking trails depart directly from the campground, including a short interpretive nature trail. Nearby attractions include Skull Rock, Hidden Valley, Keys View, and countless climbing routes. The dramatic boulder formations surrounding the campsites make this a favorite among families with children who enjoy scrambling on rocks, though the same features mean some sites are quite close to neighbors while others offer excellent privacy nestled between massive stones. As a true backcountry desert experience, Jumbo Rocks has no potable water or hookups. The nearest water is at the Oasis Visitor Center, 11 miles away. Vault toilets are distributed throughout the campground and maintained regularly. An amphitheater hosts evening ranger programs during peak season. The incredibly dark skies make this one of the premier stargazing locations in Southern California. Desert wildlife including lizards, ravens, ground squirrels, and occasionally bobcats may be spotted, especially during cooler months. Rattlesnakes and scorpions are present—watch where you step and place your hands. The campground sees peak visitation from October through May when daytime temperatures hover between 70-90°F and nights drop to 40-60°F. Summer brings extreme heat often exceeding 100°F, making it the park's off-season. Site sizes vary significantly—some accommodate RVs up to 35 feet while others are tent-only. Site 84 is the longest at roughly 40 feet. Careful review of individual site specifications on Recreation.gov before booking is essential, as not all sites can accommodate trailers or multiple vehicles.
