About

Ryan Campground occupies a scenic location in the heart of Joshua Tree National Park, surrounded by the massive boulder formations that define this desert landscape. At an elevation of 4,400 feet, the campground's 31 sites are nestled on flat, sandy terrain between towering rock formations that glow with pastel hues at sunrise and sunset. The facility is particularly popular with families due to its proximity to climbable boulders and rock formations, as well as with rock climbers who appreciate camping near world-class bouldering areas. The campground requires reservations year-round and can be booked up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov. Sites accommodate tents and RVs up to 35 feet, though site sizes vary and some cannot accommodate the maximum six people and two vehicles. Four designated equestrian sites are available for those traveling with horses. Three walk-in bicycle sites are also available on a first-come, first-served basis for $5 per night. Visitors should come prepared as there is no water available at the campground, and the nearest town (Twentynine Palms) is 17 miles away. The campground offers vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Several hiking trails depart from the campground, including access to Ryan Mountain and the California Riding and Hiking Trail. The clear desert skies provide exceptional stargazing opportunities. Seasonal fire restrictions prohibit wood and charcoal fires from mid-June through September, allowing only gas or propane stoves during this period.
