About

Jack Creek Recreation Area is a primitive campground nestled in the Ouachita National Forest, located in a scenic setting alongside towering rock bluffs and the flowing waters of Sugar Creek. Constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the area displays several unique historic facilities that reflect its rich heritage. The campground offers basic amenities including picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and vault toilets, but has no potable water or hookups. A natural swimming hole in Sugar Creek provides refreshing recreation during warmer months. A short trail climbs to a recently restored rock overlook offering panoramic views of pine forests and seasonal foliage. The area serves as a trailhead for the Hole-In-The-Ground Mountain Hiking Trail (approximately 4 miles) and the Sugar Creek Hiking Trail (approximately 3 miles, connecting to Knopper's Ford Recreation Area). This free, first-come, first-served campground appeals to those seeking a rustic camping experience surrounded by natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, fishing, picnicking, and wildlife viewing in the Ouachita Mountains.
