About

Located high in the Santa Fe National Forest at over 9,000 feet elevation, Iron Gate Campground provides convenient access to the scenic Pecos Wilderness. The campground offers 14 individual campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire pit with grill. Four horse corrals are available for equestrian campers, making this a popular destination for horseback riders exploring the wilderness trails. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Basic amenities include vault toilets and trash bins, but there is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own. The site is reached via Forest Road 223, which is very rough and not suitable for low clearance vehicles or RVs. Maximum recommended vehicle and trailer length is 30 feet. Open seasonally from May through November weather permitting, Iron Gate serves as an excellent staging area for wilderness adventures. The campground enforces quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., limits sites to 3 vehicles each, and prohibits ATVs. A livestock gate on Forest Road 223 may be encountered; visitors should pass through and close it behind them.

Directions
