Indian Grinding Rock Campground

Open

Open year-round. Reservations available through ReserveCalifornia. The campground closes Thursday through Sunday night during the Big Time celebration (fourth Friday in September).

About

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park preserves the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America, where Miwok people ground acorns for thousands of years. The campground occupies the southern portion of this 135-acre park at 2,400 feet elevation, surrounded by meadows and three species of native oaks. The 22 standard campsites accommodate vehicles up to 27 feet and each includes a fire ring and picnic table. Two sites (#7 and #13) are fully ADA accessible with dedicated parking and connecting routes to the restroom/shower building. Token-operated showers are available, and potable water is provided throughout the campground. For a more immersive experience, seven traditional bark houses (U'macha'tam'ma') offer environmental group camping for up to six people each. These primitive sites require hauling water and gear 200+ yards from parking, with no showers or flush toilets at those sites.

Directions

From Jackson, take Highway 88 east for approximately 8 miles, then turn left onto Pine Grove-Volcano Road. The park entrance is about 1.5 miles on the left.
