About
Deer Flat Boat-In Campground is New Hogan Lake's only boat-access camping area, located on a peninsula on the south shore of the 4,400-acre reservoir. This primitive campground offers 30 first-come, first-served campsites that provide a unique opportunity for boaters to camp right on the waterfront away from the developed facilities. The campground is only accessible by boat, making it ideal for campers seeking a more secluded experience on the lake. New Hogan Lake sits in the oak- and brush-covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, created in 1964 with the completion of New Hogan Dam. The lake extends nearly eight miles upstream with 50 miles of shoreline when full. Popular activities include water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and fishing for striped bass, black bass, catfish, bluegill, and crappie. The area is characterized by hot, dry summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90 degrees. Wildlife is abundant on the surrounding 6,500 acres of Corps-managed land. Visitors may spot black-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bald and golden eagles, osprey, red-tailed hawks, California quail, coyotes, and bobcats. The campground is located near historic gold rush sites including Carson Hill and the town of San Andreas. The nearby town of Valley Springs offers groceries, gas, and camping supplies.
Directions
From Stockton, take State Highway 26 east for 30 miles to Valley Springs. About one mile before reaching town, turn right onto Hogan Dam Road and continue for 1.5 miles to the park entrance. Access to Deer Flat Campground is by boat only from the lake.
