Due to the recent discovery of the golden mussel on the Delta which is in close proximity to New Hogan Lake, New Hogan Lake staff will be conducting random vessel inspections at this time. Requirements in order to launch your vessel include having your California boater card, current vessel registration including a current mussel fee sticker, and your vessel must be clean, drained and dried prior to launching. Additional information is available at calling the New Hogan Lake Project Office at 209-772-1343.
About
Oak Knoll Campground is located along New Hogan Lake in the brush-covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Calaveras County. The campground offers 49 spacious, relatively primitive campsites situated on a hillside with views of the 4,400-acre reservoir. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the facility provides drinking water via spigots but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Paved site driveways may not be level, so RVers should bring leveling equipment. New Hogan Lake was created in 1964 with the completion of New Hogan Dam and features 50 miles of shoreline when full. The lake is popular for water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, and year-round fishing for stripers, bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Boat ramps are conveniently located around the lake. The area supports diverse wildlife including grey fox, mule deer, turkey, mountain lion, bobcat, and wintering bald eagles. The south shore serves as a designated wildlife viewing area. Recreational opportunities include the River of Skulls hiking trail below the dam, an eight-mile equestrian trail loop, and bicycle trails ranging from beginner to advanced. An easy 3-mile bike trail connects the park office with Acorn Campground. Hunting for upland game and waterfowl is permitted in designated areas during open season. Nearby attractions include Carson Hill, site of the largest gold nugget discovery, and historic San Andreas where outlaw Black Bart was captured.
