About

Hunter Camp is a very primitive, no-fee campground located in the heart of Kisatchie National Forest's Calcasieu Ranger District, Vernon Unit. The campground features a basic camping loop designed for dispersed camping in a heavily forested setting. While primarily utilized by hunters during deer season, the camp welcomes all visitors year-round for wildlife viewing, hiking, and nature observation. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the surrounding forest. The Ouiska Chitto Trail is centrally located near the camp, and the Big Branch Trail runs right next to the camping area. The nearby Longleaf Scenic Area offers additional opportunities for viewing the region's distinctive longleaf pine ecosystem. Visitors should come prepared for a truly primitive experience with no potable water available on-site. Located in Vernon Parish, the campground provides access to the vast 85,000-acre Vernon Unit of the Kisatchie National Forest, offering solitude and immersion in Louisiana's only national forest. The area is popular with wildlife watchers, plant enthusiasts, and those seeking a remote camping experience away from developed facilities.
