Hozomeen Campground

About

Hozomeen Campground occupies a spectacular location at the northern terminus of Ross Lake, within the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. This free, primitive campground is one of the most remote developed camping areas in the North Cascades National Park Complex, accessible only by driving through Canada on the Silver-Skagit Road. The campground offers 75 sites on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations or fees required. The campground provides basic facilities suitable for tent camping and some sites can accommodate trailers and RVs, though the rough access road and remote location make this more suitable for smaller units. Amenities include vault toilets, seasonal potable water, picnic tables, and fire grates at each site. Visitors must pack out all trash as there is no waste collection service. Two graded cement boat ramps provide excellent access to Ross Lake for fishing, boating, and paddling, though ramp accessibility depends on lake levels and is generally best from mid-June through September. The campground's isolation and stunning mountain scenery make it popular with visitors seeking a true backcountry experience with vehicle access. Note that the upper loop of the campground remains closed indefinitely due to hazard trees. The gate at Hozomeen is closed to direct vehicle and foot traffic across the US-Canada border; all visitors must enter through designated ports of entry. The campground operates seasonally from late May through October, with exact dates varying based on weather and road conditions.

Directions

The only vehicle access to Hozomeen is via Canada. Take Highway 1 to exit 168, approximately 3 kilometers west of Hope, British Columbia. Turn onto Silver-Skagit Road and travel south for 39 miles on gravel road to reach the campground. The road is periodically graded but expect washboards and potholes. You must enter through a designated US-Canada port of entry; the gate at Hozomeen is closed to direct border crossing.
