About

Harts Pass Campground sits at 6,200 feet elevation in the high alpine region of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, making it one of the highest campgrounds accessible by vehicle in Washington State. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail runs directly through the campground, and numerous trails provide access into the adjacent Pasayten Wilderness. The forested campground is surrounded by alpine meadows and offers exceptional mountain views. The campground is accessed via Hart's Pass Road (Forest Road 5400), a narrow, winding gravel road with steep drop-offs and limited turnouts. Due to the challenging road conditions, trailers are strictly prohibited from June 1 through December 31. The road typically closes for winter around December 1, making the campground a seasonal destination. Visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions: no potable water is available, and campers must pack out all trash as no receptacles are provided. The location is ideal for experienced backcountry enthusiasts. Short hikes lead to Slate Peak Lookout, while longer treks venture into the Pasayten Wilderness. The high elevation means cooler temperatures even in summer and the possibility of snow well into July. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire pit, and vault toilets serve the campground.
