About
Houston Recreation Area is located on the scenic shores of Lake Lewis Smith within the William B. Bankhead National Forest in Winston County, Alabama. This day-use facility serves as a popular destination for lake-based recreation and outdoor activities. The recreation area features 14 individual picnic sites and a group pavilion that can accommodate up to 50 people, making it suitable for family gatherings and group events. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful sand swimming beach with a modern bathhouse facility that includes showers during the operational season. The boat launch provides year-round access to Lake Lewis Smith for fishing and motorized boating. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding national forest, offering opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Bankhead. While Houston Recreation Area historically included camping facilities, the campground portion remains closed to the public. Day-use parking and beach access are typically available from May through September, with the group pavilion available through October. The boat ramp operates year-round with a day-use fee. This recreation area represents one of several water-based recreation opportunities within Bankhead National Forest, complementing the forest's extensive trail system and wilderness areas.
