Hopper Creek Group Camp is a secluded group camping area nestled in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests at approximately 1,100 feet elevation at the base of Thunder Ridge. The site accommodates up to 50 people and is designed exclusively for tent camping. A small stream flows past the camping area on its way to Hopper Creek and eventually the James River. The campground features 12 picnic tables, tent pads, a pedestal double grill for charcoal cooking, and a large stone campfire circle perfect for evening gatherings. A mowed grassy area provides space for games and organized activities. Bear-proof trash cans are provided, though excess trash must be packed out. Vault toilets are available on site, but there is no potable water; campers must bring their own water supply. Nearby Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area is just 3 miles away, offering a sandy beach, designated swimming area, covered picnic shelter, and showers available for a day use fee. Natural Bridge State Park is within an 8-mile drive with hiking trails and views of the 215-foot Natural Bridge. The Appalachian Trail, James River Face Wilderness, and Thunder Ridge Wilderness offer additional hiking and backpacking opportunities.

Directions

From I-81, take exit 175 or 180 and continue on US Route 11 to Natural Bridge. Turn onto VA 130 East and follow for approximately 3.2 miles to Natural Bridge Station. Turn right onto State Route 759 and continue for approximately 5 miles to a three-way intersection at Glenwood Church. Continue straight on Hopper Creek Road for approximately 1 mile to the entrance on the left.
