About

Hopper Creek Group Camp provides a rustic group camping experience nestled at the base of Thunder Ridge in the Jefferson National Forest. The campground accommodates tent camping only for groups of 10 to 50 people, with exclusive reservation of the entire facility ensuring complete privacy. A mowed grassy area is available for organized activities and games, complemented by a large campfire ring for evening gatherings. A small stream flows past the camping area, eventually feeding into Hopper Creek on its way to the James River. The campground sits at approximately 1,100 feet elevation and offers access to extensive hiking opportunities. Trails range from short walks around the nearby Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area to full-day ridge hikes and backpacking adventures on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, James River Face Wilderness, and Thunder Ridge Wilderness. Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area is 3 miles away and features a sandy beach, swimming area, and covered picnic shelter. Group campers can use the showers there for a day use fee. Natural Bridge State Park is within 8 miles, offering views of the 215-foot Natural Bridge, limestone gorge, 6 miles of hiking trails, and Lace Falls. The nearby James River provides opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. No hookups, RVs, pop-ups, or trailers are permitted at this tent-only facility.
