About
Otter Creek Campground occupies a unique position along the Blue Ridge Parkway at its lowest elevation of only 649 feet above sea level. The campground's lower elevation and abundant water from Otter Creek create warmer temperatures and support diverse plant and animal communities unlike those found at higher elevations on the Parkway. The peaceful sound of Otter Creek flowing through the campground provides a serene backdrop for camping. The James River/Otter Creek recreation area offers excellent hiking opportunities. The 3.5-mile Otter Creek Trail parallels the Parkway from the campground to the James River Visitor Center, where visitors can explore a restored canal lock from the historic Kanawha Canal. The 0.9-mile Otter Lake Loop Trail provides scenic views and wildlife watching opportunities, particularly for beavers during early morning and evening hours. The 0.4-mile Trail of Trees near the visitor center identifies native trees and shrubs of the river valley. The campground features 68 sites divided between 45 tent-only and 23 RV-only sites, with 39 sites available for advance reservation and 29 on a first-come, first-served basis. One ADA accessible site is available. The facility includes a seasonal dump station and potable water but no hookups. Flush toilets are available seasonally. Virginia state law limits RVs to 45 feet and trailers to 28.5 feet, with a combined vehicle/trailer maximum of 65 feet. Fishing is available in Otter Lake, and the area's warmer climate makes it an ideal base for exploring this distinctive section of the Parkway.
