Cantwell Cliffs Shelter is positioned in the northern reaches of Hocking Hills State Park, approximately 17 miles from Old Man's Cave along State Route 374. This shelter serves as an overnight camping option in one of the park's most remote and scenic areas. The Cantwell Cliffs area features dramatic Black Hand sandstone formations carved by Buck Run, creating deep valleys, towering cliffs reaching heights of 80 feet, and impressive rock shelters. The location offers access to the Cantwell Cliffs trail system, including both rim and gorge trails. Hikers can explore narrow passageways formed by massive slump blocks, descend rocky steps cut through the cliffs, and experience commanding views from Lookout Point on the east rim trail. The remote location means fewer visitors compared to other Hocking Hills attractions, providing a more solitary wilderness experience. The trail is pet-friendly and suitable for moderate hiking ability. As part of Hocking Hills State Park, the area is surrounded by nearly 10,000 acres of Hocking State Forest. The park system includes seven major hiking areas, all accessible year-round from dawn to dusk, with trails offering unique experiences through every season.
