Ortona South

About

Ortona South is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground situated along the Caloosahatchee River in Glades County, Florida. The campground provides a quiet, sunny escape to South Florida with 51 sites, including two pull-through sites (41 and 42). Every site features a concrete pad, electric hookups (30 and 50 amp), water hookups, a fire ring and grill, and a covered picnic table. Facilities include restrooms with showers, a sanitary dump station, dumpsters, and limited WiFi near the west end restroom. A picnic pavilion is available exclusively for campers. Activities focus on fishing and relaxing. The wooden fishing pier and bridge are currently closed due to safety concerns, but anglers can catch catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and tilapia from other access points. Walking across the dam between 7 AM and 4 PM provides access to the north side road for walking and bicycling, as well as a smaller pier where snook are commonly caught. The flat terrain is lined with tropical vegetation, and large bird species frequent the area. Nearby LaBelle hosts the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival each February. Travelers can also head east to hike or bike the Herbert Hoover Dike along Lake Okeechobee, part of the 1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail.

Directions

From LaBelle, Florida, travel SR 80 east for 8 miles to Dalton Lane. Turn north on Dalton Lane and follow the road into the campground.
