About
Ortona South campground is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and sits along the scenic Caloosahatchee River in Glades County, Florida. The campground offers 51 sites with water and electric hookups, accommodating RVs, tents, and boats. The flat terrain is lined with tropical vegetation including Sabal Palms, Florida's state tree, with the river to the north and picturesque pastures to the south. Fishing is a primary activity, with Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Tilapia commonly caught from the pier. Snook fishing is available at the north end pier, accessible by walking across the dam between 7 AM and 4 PM. The dam crossing also provides access to walking and bicycling routes on the north side of the river. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of large bird species that frequent the area. Ortona South is part of the Lake Okeechobee water resource project and shares a 14-day maximum stay in any 30-consecutive day period with St. Lucie South Campground. The campground is conveniently located near LaBelle, host to the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival each February, and offers access to the Herbert Hoover Dike and Florida National Scenic Trail to the east.
