About
Hells Gate State Park is located on the southern edge of Lewiston at the Snake River's downstream entrance to Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America. At just 733 feet above sea level, this is Idaho's lowest-elevation state park, earning Lewiston its reputation as Idaho's Banana Belt due to the mild climate and long recreation season. The campground offers approximately 93 campsites along the shores of the Snake River, including standard sites, hookup sites with electricity and water, and ADA-accessible sites. Eight cabins are also available, including one accessible cabin. Amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and trash service. Day-use locations within the park are open from 7 am to 10 pm. The park features a comprehensive trail system for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, and picnicking. The Lewis and Clark Discovery Center is located within the park and is open 6 days a week from 9 am to 5 pm, closed Wednesdays and major holidays. Hells Gate is a popular meeting place for jet boat trips into Hells Canyon, and the park offers a marina with boat moorage available year-round. Historical significance includes the site of a former Nez Perce village, with remnants of pit houses visible south of the campground.
