Hell's Canyon Campground serves as an inviting retreat nestled within the picturesque Custer Gallatin National Forest in south-central Montana. Situated at an elevation of 5,500 feet in the Main Boulder area of the Yellowstone District, this tranquil 5-acre sanctuary features 11 well-organized campsites that provide an authentic back-to-nature camping experience. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations available. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets, but campers must come prepared with their own drinking water and firewood. The site follows pack-it-in, pack-it-out principles to help preserve the area's natural beauty. Access is via Main Boulder Road (County Road 212), approximately 25 miles south of Big Timber on US 298, then 15.5 miles south on the county road. The access road is not suitable for vehicles longer than 20 feet, making this campground better suited for smaller RVs, trailers, and tent camping. Anglers will appreciate the proximity to fishing opportunities in the Boulder River drainage. Pets are welcomed at the campground. The setting provides a peaceful mountain experience surrounded by national forest lands, ideal for those seeking a quiet escape into nature.
