About
Hells Canyon Campground sits at 5,500 feet elevation in a 5-acre setting within the Custer Gallatin National Forest, approximately 40 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. The 11-site campground provides a peaceful base for exploring the Boulder River drainage and surrounding wilderness. Each site features a fire ring and picnic table, with vault toilet facilities available. This is a primitive campground with no potable water, trash service, or hookups. Campers must bring their own drinking water and firewood, and pack out all trash. The narrow access road and small parking spurs (averaging 10' x 25') make the campground unsuitable for vehicles longer than 20 feet. ADA-accessible fire rings, parking, tables, and toilets are available. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis at $10 per night ($5 for additional vehicles). Fishing opportunities in nearby streams attract anglers, and pets are welcome. The campground's remote location and limited cell service offer a true backcountry experience.
Directions
From Big Timber, travel 25 miles south on US 298, then continue 15.5 miles south on Main Boulder Road (County Road 212).
