East Boulder Campground

Open — Open year-round depending on weather conditions. Winter access may be limited by snow on East Boulder Road. First-come, first-served with no reservations.

About

East Boulder Campground offers a serene camping experience along the tranquil East Boulder River in Montana's Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located approximately 19 miles south of Big Timber on US Highway 298, then 6 miles east on East Boulder Road, this small campground features just 2 sites available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground's riverside location provides excellent opportunities for stream fishing and access to local hiking trails in the surrounding wilderness. Despite its remote feel, the campground remains accessible and attracts both local campers and visitors looking to escape the crowds of more developed areas. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site. Due to its popularity and limited capacity, arriving early is recommended to secure a site. The campground is open year-round depending on weather conditions, though winter access may be limited by snow on East Boulder Road. This rustic setting is ideal for experienced campers seeking a true backcountry experience without fees or reservations.

Directions

From Big Timber, drive 19 miles south on US Highway 298, then turn east onto East Boulder Road (County Road 205) and continue 6 miles to the campground.
