About

Matchless Campground occupies a prime location on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in the San Isabel National Forest, approximately 4 miles west of Leadville, Colorado. Perched at 9,900 feet elevation, this 20-site campground is designed to accommodate larger recreational vehicles and provides easy access to the adjacent Matchless boat ramp and parking areas. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis only, requiring visitors to physically arrive and claim a site. Facilities include vault toilets near the campground entrance, potable water via a pressurized spigot system, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Firewood is available for purchase at the campground host site. Be aware that high altitude sickness can occur at this elevation. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times. The campground is named after the famous Matchless Mine, one of Leadville's most profitable silver mines that made Horace A.W. Tabor one of the wealthiest men in America during the 1880s silver boom. Usage is moderate on weekdays but heavy on weekends during the summer season.

Directions

From Leadville, head west on W 6th Street which becomes County Road 4 (Turquoise Lake Road). Due to current road closures on CR 4, use the alternate route via County Road 9C and County Road 9 to the Hagerman Pass intersection to access the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake. The campground is located adjacent to the Matchless boat ramp.
