About
Located in Wayne County, Missouri, Markham Springs Recreation Area contains a remarkable natural feature: six springs that pour almost 5 million gallons of water daily into a 2-acre pond dating to the 1800s. The bubble spring creates unique air bubbles rising through soft sand. The area takes its name from M.J. Markham, who operated a lumber mill here from 1901 through the 1930s. The restored Fuchs House, a five-bedroom concrete and native stone home built in the late 1930s, stands as a historic landmark. The campground offers 33 sites across four loops. The Birch Loop provides 11 electric sites with hot showers and a concrete vault toilet. The Pine, River, and Sycamore loops offer 22 standard non-electric sites in more primitive, wooded settings where pop-up campers fit nicely. All sites include fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and lantern posts. The Black River offers excellent fishing for bass, sunfish, walleye, and catfish from boats or riverbanks. Canoeing and kayaking are popular. The Markham Springs Trail System provides several day hikes, including the 1.5-mile Eagle Bluff Trail loop along the river, ideal for birding and wildlife viewing.
Directions
From Poplar Bluff, take Highway 67 north for 14 miles, then turn left onto Highway 49 west for 9 miles, about 3 miles past Williamsville. Take the first right after crossing the Black River to enter Markham Springs Recreation Area.
