About

Asher Creek Campground is one of two campgrounds at Lake Wappapello State Park, located in the scenic Ozark hills of southeast Missouri. Unlike the Ridge Campground perched on higher ground, Asher Creek is nestled closer to the lake, offering campers easy water access and lakefront views. The campground features basic campsites with parking pads, picnic tables, grills, and lantern posts, but no electric hookups. Some sites sit just a short distance from the lake shore, making them ideal for anglers and water enthusiasts. The campground includes modern restrooms with hot showers and laundry facilities, providing comfort in a natural setting. A dump station is available for RV users. One of the campground's key features is its concrete boat ramp, allowing campers to launch directly into Lake Wappapello for fishing, water skiing, and boating. The lake is known for excellent populations of white bass, crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish. Asher Creek Trail begins on the west side of the campground, offering a 2-mile loop through the Ozark forest and along the Asher Creek arm of the lake, which serves as a waterfowl refuge. The trail provides opportunities for wildlife viewing and passes through mature timber stands. The campground's location also provides access to additional park amenities, including over 15 miles of multi-use trails, swimming beach, picnic areas, and playgrounds throughout Lake Wappapello State Park.

Directions

From Poplar Bluff, take US Highway 67 north approximately 15 miles to Highway 172. Follow Highway 172 east for four miles to a stop sign. Turn left and travel one mile before turning right onto Highway 172 east. Highway 172 ends in the state park. Asher Creek Campground is accessible within the park.
