About

Green Island Primitive Camping provides a remote backcountry experience on a 60-acre island located near River Mile 806 on the Missouri National Recreational River. The island offers five designated primitive campsites marked with brown camping signs and metal fire rings. Two isolated sites sit on the east side of the island for those seeking solitude, while three adjacent sites on the west side work well for groups. This is true Leave No Trace camping with no developed facilities. There is no potable water, no toilets, and no trash service. Campers must bring all supplies including drinking water and must pack out all trash. Fires are permitted only in the designated fire rings, and dead and down wood may be collected for firewood. Access to Green Island is exclusively by watercraft. A free camping permit is required for all overnight stays and can be obtained online or at the park office in Yankton, SD. While no reservations are needed, campers should call 605-665-0209 to leave their basic itinerary including name, phone, emergency contact, site location, and arrival/departure dates.
