About

Cottonwood Recreation Area is one of the most accessible campgrounds in the Lewis & Clark Lake system, situated on the calmer 250-acre Lake Yankton rather than the larger 31,400-acre reservoir upstream. The location provides excellent kayaking, canoeing, and fishing opportunities in sheltered waters while still offering quick access to the main lake's boating and sailing via nearby ramps. All 77 campsites are paved with 50-amp electric service and can accommodate large RVs up to 65-69 feet. Odd-numbered sites are pull-throughs suited for longer rigs. Two modern shower houses with flush toilets serve campers, and a dump station is conveniently located just north of the campground. The adjacent day-use area features a reservable picnic shelter, disc golf course, and accessible fishing dock. The area draws over 2 million visitors annually due to its recreational variety. Paved multi-use trails connect to Yankton and other recreation areas along the Missouri River. Winter activities include ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Firewood from outside the area is prohibited due to Emerald Ash Borer restrictions.
