About

Cottonwood Day Use Shelter is a reservable group picnic facility located within the Cottonwood Day Use Area along the western shore of Lake Yankton, just downstream of Gavins Point Dam. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of Lewis and Clark Lake recreation areas, this shelter provides an ideal setting for large group gatherings with a maximum occupancy of 200 people. The shelter is equipped with electricity, lights, water nearby, and a large grill for group cooking. The surrounding Cottonwood Day Use Area offers excellent recreational opportunities for all ages. Adjacent to the shelter are horseshoe pits, a disc golf course, a sand volleyball court, and a playground. Lake Yankton provides ample shoreline access for fishing. The area is connected to other recreation sites via paved multi-use trails. Nearby attractions include Gavins Point Dam, Lewis and Clark Lake, and historic Yankton, South Dakota. The shelter closes at 10 p.m. daily.

Directions

Take SD Highway 52 west 4 miles to the intersection with Toe Road. Cottonwood Day Use Area is approximately 1 mile south on Toe Road.
