Goat Island Primitive Camping

Open

Open year-round. Free backcountry permit required before arrival. During hunting season (Labor Day through January), camping is restricted to the two designated camping areas only.

About

Goat Island is a remote, undeveloped island in the Missouri River offering primitive tent camping within the Missouri National Recreational River. The island spans 3.6 river miles and lies between River Mile 786.2 and 782.6, roughly between Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota. Access is by boat only, making this a true backcountry experience for paddlers and boaters seeking solitude on the Missouri. The island has two designated tent camping areas marked with brown signs and metal fire rings. Outside of hunting season, primitive camping is permitted anywhere on the island. During the established hunting season from Labor Day through January, camping is restricted to the two designated areas. Dead and down wood may be collected for campfires. This is Leave No Trace camping with no developed facilities. There is no potable water, no toilets, and no trash service. Campers must be self-sufficient and pack out all waste. A free backcountry permit is required; call the park headquarters at 605-665-0209 before your visit to provide your itinerary.
