Gill Point

Open

Gill Point is a day-use recreation area with a reservable group shelter, not a traditional campground with individual overnight sites. The facility operates daily 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a $5-7 entry fee. The group shelter (capacity 24) can be reserved through Recreation.gov; shelter must be occupied by 2:00 p.m. on reservation day.

About

Gill Point Recreation Area sits on the northern end of J. Strom Thurmond Lake, a 70,000-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir straddling the Georgia-South Carolina border. The area is accessible via Georgia State Highway 79, approximately 12 miles north of Lincolnton. The facility centers on a reservable group shelter that can accommodate up to 24 people for picnics and gatherings. Supporting amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, a boat ramp with courtesy dock, and a designated swimming beach. The mixed pine and hardwood forest provides shade along the shoreline. The lake offers fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and striped bass. Boating, water skiing, and swimming are popular activities. Wildlife including bald eagles, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer frequent the area. The historic town of Petersburg lies submerged beneath the lake, and Elberton, the Granite Capital of the World, is 20 miles northwest.
