About
Gibson Prairie Horse Camp is a primitive equestrian campground tucked into the forests east of Mount Hood in Oregon's Hood River Ranger District. Designed specifically for horse camping, the facility offers four campsites, each equipped with log corrals for stock and parking space for two horse trailers or rigs. A stock tank fed by spring water provides drinking water for horses, and a manure bin is available for responsible waste management. The campground serves as a base for exploring the Gibson Prairie Trail System, including the Mustang Trail and connections to the broader Surveyors Ridge network. These trails offer miles of riding through mixed conifer forests with views of Mount Hood and the surrounding wilderness. The camp operates first-come, first-served with no fees and no reservations. This is a primitive, backcountry-style facility. There is no potable water for humans, so campers must bring their own drinking water. A vault toilet is provided. The access road and campground can accommodate vehicles up to 56 feet in length, though the forest roads leading to the site require careful driving with stock trailers.
