About

Cloud Cap Saddle Campground is a small, primitive campground situated at the trailhead for some of Mount Hood's most scenic north-side trails. The site serves as the starting point for the Timberline National Historic Trail #600 and Tilly Jane Trail #600A, making it popular with hikers and climbers seeking access to the mountain's northern approaches. The campground is operated by Lost Lake Resort and is first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted. Amenities are minimal: vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The Historic Cloud Cap Inn, now used by the Hood River Crag Rats search and rescue team, is located just up the road. Access to the campground requires navigating Cloud Cap Road (Forest Road 3512), a narrow, winding route that may require a high-clearance or four-wheel drive vehicle. The road is subject to seasonal closure due to snow, typically opening in early July and closing in fall depending on conditions. Mount Hood Wilderness restrictions apply to the surrounding area.

Directions

From Hood River, travel approximately 13.1 miles south on Oregon Hwy 35 and turn right (west) onto Cooper Spur Road, approximately 0.3 miles south of milepost 74. Follow Cooper Spur Road 2.4 miles to Cloud Cap Road (Forest Road 3512) and turn left (southeast). Follow Cloud Cap Road approximately 9.8 miles to the campground. Note: Forest Road 3512 is narrow and winding and may require a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle.
