About

Gerald Freeman Campground is nestled in the headwaters of Sutton Lake in central West Virginia, approximately 70 miles north of Charleston. The campground provides access to 1,440 acres of lake water that winds 14 miles up the Elk River with 40 miles of shoreline. The facility features 156 campsites total, with 113 sites offering electric hookups and 37 sites with full hookups (water, electric, and sewer). All sites include picnic tables and fire rings on spacious, paved, level pads. The campground offers comprehensive amenities including hot showers, flush toilets, dump station, boat launch, and an on-site marina with snack bar. Recreational facilities include playgrounds and basketball courts. The lake provides excellent fishing opportunities for bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish, while the Elk River below Sutton Dam is known for muskie and walleye. Trout are stocked in the downstream area. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills covered with mixed hardwood forests of oak, hickory, poplar, and cherry trees. Wildlife is abundant, including deer, turkeys, squirrels, ruffed grouse, and Canada geese. Fire roads and hunting trails in the surrounding lands and nearby Elk River Wildlife Management Area provide hiking and biking opportunities. The campground schedules various activities throughout the summer for children of all ages.

Directions

From I-79, take exit 67. Turn right on WV-4 and go 1 mile. Turn left on WV-15 and travel 12 miles to the campground. Campground will be on your right.
