About
Gerald Freeman Campground occupies a scenic position at the headwaters of Sutton Lake in Braxton County, where the Holly River meets the 1,440-acre reservoir. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the facility provides 156 sites with varying levels of service: 37 sites offer full hookups (water and electric), 113 have electric-only service with 20/30/50 amp options, and the remainder are non-electric. Sites accommodate RVs up to 59 feet on paved, back-in driveways. Flush restrooms with hot showers serve the camping loops. The lake winds 14 miles up the Elk River valley, creating 40 miles of shoreline with quiet coves among rolling hills of oak, hickory, poplar, and cherry. Anglers target bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish in the lake; the tailwaters below Sutton Dam are known for muskie, walleye, and stocked trout. The on-site marina offers boat rental and a snack bar, with multiple boat ramps providing lake access. Fire roads and hunting trails extend into the surrounding Elk River Wildlife Management Area's 18,000 acres. Playgrounds and basketball courts serve families, and scheduled activities run throughout summer. The campground operates from May through early December, with reservations available through Recreation.gov and some sites held for first-come, first-served use.
