About

Black Canyon Rim Campground is sheltered among towering ponderosa pines at 7,600 feet elevation in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The campground features 20 sites of varying sizes in a relatively flat, sandy area. All sites can accommodate tents and pop-up campers, while some sites are suitable for pull trailers, 5th-wheel trailers, and motorhomes up to 40 feet. Fishing and boating with electric motors are available at Black Canyon Lake, approximately 2.5 miles northeast of the campground via Forest Road 86. The campground is a popular stopping point for travelers on the General Crook National Recreation Trail. The area is known for its wild horse population, with herds often seen running through the area and stopping at Black Canyon Lake for water. Each campsite includes a campfire ring with grill and picnic table. The campground provides vault toilets, drinking water, and trash service. A campground host is available during the operating season. The historic grave site of Stott, Scott, and Wilson, three young men lynched during the Pleasant Valley War, is located within walking distance. Gas, phone, and groceries are available 8 miles west at Forest Lakes or 13 miles east at Heber.

Directions

From Highway 260, travel 13 miles west of Heber, Arizona (or approximately 1 mile east of Forest Lakes). Turn south on Forest Road 300 and travel approximately 2.4 miles. Access the campground off Forest Road 300 via Forest Road 86 at the intersection of Forest Roads 300 and 86.
