About
Geneva Basin Cabin is the former ski patrol building from Geneva Basin Ski Area (originally Indianhead Ski Area), a small resort that operated from 1961 until its closure in 1984. The ski lodge was burned down by the Forest Service in 1993 to prevent vandalism, but the patrol hut at the top of the former Duck Creek lift remains standing. This rustic structure is NOT an official USFS rental cabin. It exists through a gentleman's agreement between local backcountry users and the Forest Service. Volunteers maintain the hut, which contains a wood-burning stove, chairs, tables, and beds, though conditions are basic and somewhat dirty. Backcountry skiers and hikers use it as a shelter or overnight destination. Access is via Guanella Pass Road, approximately 10 miles north of Grant or 13 miles south of Georgetown. The road is paved but closes seasonally due to snow, typically from late fall through late spring. Users must travel on foot from an access gate to reach the former ski terrain and patrol hut. Be aware of avalanche risks in winter months.
Directions
From Grant, CO: Take Guanella Pass Road north approximately 10 miles. From Georgetown, CO: Take Guanella Pass Road south approximately 13 miles. Park at the access gate and travel on foot to the former ski area terrain where the patrol hut is located at the top of the old Duck Creek lift.
