About
Frosty Bay Cabin is a remote USFS rental cabin situated on the south shore of Frosty Bay, on the Cleveland Peninsula of mainland Alaska. Located 36 miles south of Wrangell, access is exclusively by float plane (32 miles) or boat. A mooring buoy is anchored in the bay for cabin guests. The surrounding rainforest features Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and cedar, with elevations reaching 2,800 feet. The 14x16 hunter-style cabin sleeps six with two single bunks, two double bunks, a half loft for storage, and a small wrap-around deck. Amenities include a table, benches, oil stove for heat (guests must bring #1 stove oil), a wooden cooler box, and an outhouse. There is no electricity, potable water, or cell service. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated. Fishing is excellent with king salmon (May-July), pink salmon (July-August), and silver salmon (August-September). Crab, halibut, and shrimp are available in nearby saltwater. A 600-foot planked trail connects to 10 miles of unmaintained roads for hiking and hunting. The area has a high density of brown bears; proper food storage and bear awareness are essential. High levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) have been reported in the area.
