About
McDonald Lake Cabin sits on Wolverine Island near the outlet of McDonald Lake on the Cleveland Peninsula, roughly 50 miles from Ketchikan in the Tongass National Forest. This rustic 12x14-foot Pan-Abode log cabin, constructed in 1967, provides a remote wilderness base accessible only by floatplane or boat. Visitors arriving by boat can anchor at Yes Bay and hike the 1.5-mile McDonald Lake Trail, which features a historic 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps three-sided shelter. The cabin accommodates six guests with two double bunks and two single bunks. Inside you'll find a wood stove, cooking counter, table with benches, shelving, and basic tools including an axe, maul, and splitting wedges. An outhouse is provided. There is no electricity, indoor plumbing, potable water, or cell phone coverage. Visitors must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. A skiff with oars is available for rowing on the lake, but guests must supply their own life jackets and motor if desired. The surrounding old-growth cedar, Sitka spruce, and Western hemlock rainforest hosts abundant wildlife including Sitka black-tailed deer, black and brown bears, wolves, and various furbearers. Steelhead and salmon run up Wolverine Creek, while the lake holds resident trout and Dolly Varden.
