About

McDonald Lake Cabin sits on Wolverine Island near the outlet of McDonald Lake, 50 miles from Ketchikan in the Tongass National Forest. This primitive 12x14-ft pan-abode style log cabin was constructed in 1967 and accommodates up to 6 people with 2 double bunks and 2 single bunks. The cabin features a woodstove, cooking counter, table with benches, shelves, cupboard space, and basic tools including an ax, maul, and splitting wedges. An outhouse is located nearby. Access to the cabin requires either floatplane or boat travel to Yes Bay, followed by a 1.5-mile hike on the McDonald Lake Trail, which features a historic 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps three-sided shelter. A skiff with oars is provided at the cabin for rowing around the lake, though visitors must bring their own life jackets. The skiff can accommodate a short-shaft motor, which is not provided. The cabin is backed by old-growth cedar, Sitka spruce, and Western hemlock rainforest with views across the lake to surrounding mountain peaks. Fishing opportunities include steelhead and salmon runs up Wolverine Creek, as well as resident trout and Dolly Varden throughout the lake. Wildlife in the area includes Sitka black-tailed deer, black and brown bears, wolves, beavers, martens, minks, and otters. The cabin has no electricity, indoor plumbing, drinking water, or cell phone coverage. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, cooking equipment, water or filtration supplies, and pack out all trash.
